The Piopio  bird is the NZ native Thrush - now extinct. 

All Streets in Piopio are named after NZ native birds.

The village is the central service area to a wide & diverse farming community. 


Piopio is on SH3 midway between Hamilton (104km) & New Plymouth (135km), and is the ideal comfort & refreshments central stop over, being only10 KM from SH4 turn off, to Taupo, National Park or Rotorua, or 25 Km to Te Kuiti or Waitomo Caves via scenic Troopers road. Daily average traffic count is around 2800 vehicle per day.

The village is a service centre to a vibrant farming district; with two rural Farming suppliers, Service station, Cosmoplitain club. Farm machinery & 4WD vehicles, Vet Clinic, Vehicle servicing, Panel shop, Hairdresser,  regular daily Courier service, - including and most trades. Piopio is also the home of both a large trucking company, bus/coach service and two modern well equipted Primary and Secondary schools. Cafes, Four square superette, Lotto, Hotel with accomodation, Antiques, Postal centre, Computer servicing, Op shop, Doctor, are but some of the service facilties avaialable, and includes a manned police station. Piopio is the service centre town to a very wide and diverse Farming community extending from Mokau through to Marokopa and inland towards Tauramui..

Places of Interest

Numerous day and short walks and tramps within easy access of Piopio, including Mokau river, Mangaotaki scenic walk, Whakatumtuma Mission station, Waitangaru Falls, Omaru Falls and Mairoa reservation native tree & fern bush track. The community is centally situated to numerous other attractoins. A well situated motorhome park with toilet faciltes is also sited in in aprivate area of the village. Two churchs still hold regular services. The tennis, golf, bowls and squash are all active clubs within the community along with a GYM and sports ground. The Piopio district aboumds in magnifceint gardens, most of which open to view with prior notice.
